Family care

Gentle dental care that includes the teenager

Teenagers should hear explanations directly and take part in dental decisions, with suitable support and clear privacy arrangements.

Hear the teenager’s account

A teen may attend with a caregiver but have their own description of pain, appearance worries or fear. The dental team should invite that account. Quietness is not proof that questions are answered. Ask what the patient finds difficult and explain the planned examination or procedure in language they can use.

Make cleaning advice specific

Busy routines, fixed appliances or difficult surfaces can create practical obstacles. Ask the dentist or hygienist to show the actual area needing attention and a suitable technique. A lecture about responsibility is less useful than knowing which tooth surface is being missed. Home care should be realistic and linked to the mouth’s findings.

Separate health and appearance choices

A teen may ask about whitening, bonding or orthodontics during a checkup. Those requests need assessment, limitations and appropriate consent, rather than an automatic cosmetic package. Explain whether the issue concerns disease, function, appearance or more than one goal. A photograph online does not establish the right treatment or timing.

Include support without assuming authority

Ontario consent depends on the person’s ability to understand the relevant information and appreciate consequences in the circumstances, not a universal age shortcut. Ask how the patient and caregiver will participate and what confidentiality means. A supporter can help remember information without automatically replacing the teenager’s own decisions.

Know how to report a problem

Agree on a pause signal and encourage an accurate description of pain. For braces or another appliance, clarify which team handles which concern. New swelling, injury or worsening symptoms need appropriate advice before routine recall. Leave with a clear next step addressed to the teenager as well as any agreed helper.

Three questions to bring.

  1. Can you show me the area you mean?
  2. How am I included in decisions?
  3. Who handles an appliance concern?
